Can you actually live without your gallbladder? Yes — and that simple fact is why removing it is the usual answer when the organ keeps causing trouble. The operation is called a cholecystectomy. The long video embedded at the top of this page follows a laparoscopic one from start to finish, all twelve and a half minutes of it, so you can watch the sequence this article walks through. Laparoscopic just means the work is done through small openings with a camera, rather than through one large cut.

First, why it comes out at all

Your gallbladder sits just under your liver and stores bile, releasing it to help digest fat. Its most common problem is stones — hard deposits that can block its outlet and set off episodes of pain, nausea, and inflammation. Medication can't reliably dissolve those stones or stop them forming again, so when attacks keep returning, surgeons generally recommend taking the whole organ out rather than only the stones. Leave the gallbladder behind and new stones tend to follow. Your liver, meanwhile, goes on making bile without it.

Small openings, a camera, and a clear view

Once you're asleep under general anaesthesia, the surgeon makes a few small openings in the abdomen. Through one goes a laparoscope — a thin tube with a camera that shows the inside of your abdomen on a screen — and through the others go slim instruments. A little gas is used to lift the abdominal wall away from the organs, which sounds odd but simply gives the surgeon room to see and to work. From here on, everything you watch in the video happens on that screen view.

Freeing it, clipping the connections, and taking it out

Working on screen, the surgeon carefully frees the gallbladder from the liver bed it rests against. Its two connections — the duct that carries bile and the artery that supplies it — are closed off with small clips and divided. Then the gallbladder is drawn out through one of the small openings, sometimes inside a retrieval bag. It's the same small-openings logic used for other abdominal operations on this site, including the one in our article on appendectomy — different organ, similar respect for getting in and out with as little disruption as possible. If you'd like a second angle on the gallbladder operation itself, this educational version of laparoscopic cholecystectomy walks through the same procedure with teaching in mind. Occasionally a surgeon decides mid-operation that an open approach, through a larger cut, is the safer way to finish — that's a judgement for safety, not a failure.

Afterwards, without a gallbladder

Bile doesn't stop; it just loses its storage pouch. Instead of being held and released in a bolus, bile from your liver now drips more steadily into your intestine. Most people digest food comfortably on that arrangement, though rich, fatty meals are often best reintroduced gradually while your system settles. Recovery, diet, and follow-up specifics vary from person to person, so follow the guidance your own surgical team gives you rather than a timetable from the internet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is gallbladder removal major surgery?
It is a real operation under general anaesthesia, so it deserves to be taken seriously, but the laparoscopic version through small openings is one of the most commonly performed abdominal operations. Whether it is done as a day case or with a short stay, and how involved your operation is, depends on your circumstances and how inflamed the gallbladder is.

Will I need a special diet for life?
No single lifelong diet is prescribed just because the gallbladder has gone. Many people eat normally, sometimes after a gentler reintroduction of fatty foods in the early weeks. If particular foods reliably upset your digestion afterwards, mention it at follow-up so your team can check nothing else is going on.

What is the difference between laparoscopic and open cholecystectomy?
The goal is identical — the gallbladder comes out. Laparoscopic surgery does that through a few small openings with a camera; open surgery uses one larger cut below the ribs, which may be chosen from the start for a complicated case or adopted during an operation if the surgeon needs a clearer, safer view.

Educational only — this article is general information about gallbladder removal, not medical advice. Repeated pain in the upper right of your abdomen, especially with fever or yellowing of the eyes, needs prompt assessment by your own doctor or surgical team, who can examine you and arrange the right scans.
