Forceps Delivery: How Obstetric Forceps Assist a Birth
An educational video showing how forceps are used to assist delivery during childbirth, and when clinicians choose them. Educational only — not medical advice.
Video Transcript
A narrated technique demonstration of forceps delivery. It describes applying the blades in turn — the left blade first, guided by the internal hand protecting the maternal sidewall and easing the blade around the fetal head without forcing it with the external hand — then repeating the same careful placement on the opposite side.

The left blade is inserted first using the left hand to grasp the handle, and the right hand is inserted into the vagina to protect the left maternal sidewall during insertion. Insert the blade flat against the posterior aspect of the vagina and use the internal hand to guide the blade laterally and deep around the fetal head. Do not use the external hand holding the forceps handle to force the blade into position. The external head should only support the weight of the blade while the internal hand gently positions the forcep blade.
Repeat the same steps on the opposite side with the right hand on the blade and the left hand on the right.
