Pediatric Catheter Insertion in a baby girl
This video shows how to insert a catheter in a baby girl
Video Transcript
A teaching narration on collecting urine specimens from infants, covering four methods: clean-catch voiding, an adhesive collection bag, bladder catheterization, and suprapubic aspiration. Most of the detail goes to the bag method — cleansing, applying the adhesive opening, checking it every fifteen minutes — and to the catheterization materials and technique for male and female infants. The narration is in English throughout.

There were four methods of urine collection. Collection by voluntary voiding or clean catch method, collection in containers attached to the genitalia, bladder catheterization, or suprapubic bladder aspiration. This is most commonly used in infants. Carefully cleanse the genitalia with the antiseptic solution. Dry the skin surface, the paper backing on the upper part of the bag, exposing the adhesive surface. For the male, insert the penis through the round opening in the bag. For the female, apply a round opening in the bag over the upper part of the burpa.
Press the adhesive surface firmly against the skin. The diaper may be applied over the specimen bag, but the bag should be examined at least every 15 minutes, and the specimen sent for culture or refrigerated immediately after voiding. After the urine sample is collected, remove the bag and fold the two adhesive surfaces together, sealing the container. The materials for bladder catheterization are rubber gloves, sterile cotton balls, antiseptic solution, collection bottle, lubricant, and urethral catheters. Wear sterile gloves. Pants area. The lubricated catheter tip is held about 5 cm
from its terminal end and gently inserted into the urethra. In the male, gentle traction is applied to the penis in a caudal direction to help straighten the course of the penile urethra. The catheter is slowly advanced until some resistance is met at the external sphincter. In the female, the labia are held wide apart, the urethral oretis is clearly identified and the lubricated catheter tip is gently introduced into the opening. The urethra of the female infant is somewhat sea shaped with the meatas representing the bottom of the sea.
The catheter therefore should be started in a slightly downward direction. Only a few centimeters of advancement is required to reach the bladder. The catheter is held in place until the specimen is collected and is then carefully removed.
