IV insertion is necessary to obtain access to peripheral venous circulation to deliver fluid medications or blood products. In infants, the fifth interdigital vein is recommended because of its fairly constant position. Other venous access sites include dorsal metacarpal veins, median vein, greater and lesser sapinus vein. Prepare the following materials. Infusion Sip, Solution and Two Veins, Antiseptic Solution and Sponges, Gauge 22 or 24 IV Catteter, 3 ml syringe, fill with sterile normal saline, and tourniquet. Grance the hand with antiseptic solution. Allow the antiseptic to dry. Apply the tourniquet to the forearm. If veins are not visible, rub the surface briskly with alcohol to distend the vessel.

Select a vein in the metacarpal area. Stretch the skin, tout over the dorsum of the patient's hand and pull the sterile in the opposite direction of the needle insertion. Check the patency of the system by infusing two or three ml of saline from the syringe. Connect the infusion set and regulate the drip.
