Anytime you're having unprotected sex, there's always a chance that a woman can get pregnant. Pregnancy requires sperm and egg to meet up together so a woman needs to be during her most fertile time of the month, which is usually 6 days out of the month; 5 days leading up to ovulation and on the day of ovulation. For most women, ovulation happens 12-16 days before her period's going to start. So a woman is usually most fertile for a week to a week and a half after her period has ended generally speaking, if you don't want to count each and every single day. So if you have unprotected intercourse during this time, then there's a high probability that a woman can get pregnant. Now, you mentioned that your girlfriend is supposed to start her period in about five days or so. If you've had intercourse any time leading up to this, there's always a chance that she could get pregnant. But as for the mechanics of it all, in order to get pregnant, semen needs to be inserted inside the vaginal canal where the egg and sperm can then meet. So if that did not happen, then the chances of her getting pregnant are slim. But if that has happened, the chances of her getting pregnant are great. So it would be best for you and her to just wait until her period is supposed to start and if she's late, then take an over-the-counter pregnancy test and if it's positive, congratulations to both of you! If it's negative and she still doesn't start her period, then tell her to wait about 5-7 days. Take another test and then maybe at that point, it will be positive if she is indeed pregnant. If she continues to not have a period or she's concerned about anything, it would be best for her to follow up with her doctor and they can decide if further investigation or treatment is warranted. To avoid pregnancy and STDs, always remember to use a condom every time you have sex โ€” including oral, vaginal, or anal sex. Whenever oral sex is being performed on a girl, a dental dam should be used. A guy receiving oral sex should wear a latex condom โ€” or, if he or his partner is allergic to latex, a polyurethane condom.

Although individual surgeons and centers employ different methods to insert a left ventricular assist device (LVAD), the fundamental concepts remain true for all. That is, most devices use the apex of the left ventricle (LV) as the inflow site to the pump, which subsequently gives off an outflow graft to the aorta, thus bypassing the ailing LV. Currently available devices do not differ significantly with regard to general implantation technique. The sequence of implantation can vary also from patient to patient, depending on the particular situation. In some cases, concomitant procedures may be performed in conjunction with LVAD implantation without adversely affecting outcome.

The spine is made flexible by discs located between each vertebra and ligaments made of tough elastic fibers which hold the vertebrae together. The spine gives the body stability and protects the spinal cord which is located in a narrow canal that runs through the center of each vertebra.

Though you might think of your spinal cord as one single piece, it's actually a column of nerves protected by a sheath of myelin and then further secured by 31 butterfly-shaped vertebrae (singular: vertebra). Medical providers divide the spinal cord into four distinct regions. Knowing the region in which the injury is located is often the key to understanding diagnosis and treatment. The four spinal cord regions are: The cervical spinal cord: This is the topmost portion of the spinal cord, where the brain connects to the spinal cord, and the neck connects to the back. This region consists of eight vertebrae, commonly referred to as C1-C8. All spinal cord numbers are descending, so C1 is the highest vertebra, while C8 is the lowest in this region. The thoracic spinal cord: This section forms the middle of the spinal cord, containing twelve vertebrae numbered T1-T12.
