Our hospital’s Division of Pediatric Surgery is offering this program in affiliation with Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University .

The goal of the fellowship is to give individuals who have completed an accredited general surgery residency advanced knowledge and training in the management and surgical treatment of newborns, infants and children.

Our Fellowship Program
This fellowship will help you prepare for certification by the American Board of Surgery, and is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The Pediatric Surgery Fellowship aims to:

train a well-rounded, empathetic, safe pediatric surgeon who is confident managing all aspects of the surgical care of children.
steward our fellow in quality improvement projects and methodology, and provide research opportunities.
provide a rigorous didactic curriculum for our fellow utilizing 360 degree feedback.
cultivate opportunities for our fellow to educate residents and students.
encourage our fellow to collaborate across specialties.
develop our fellow’s presentation skills during M&M conferences and multi-disciplinary educational meetings.
The program features the full participation of all nine of the pediatric surgical division’s full-time faculty members. Each of these physicians will contribute greatly to your education. Your training will include operating room and outpatient clinic experience, as well as bedside evaluation of children. You’ll also play a role in the organization of formal teaching conferences, held weekly. Formal rotations will be spent on Pediatric Urology, PICU and Neonatology during the first 12 months. The last year will be spent entirely on the Pediatric Surgical Service.
The majority of your inpatient consultative time will take place at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, a freestanding children’s hospital in Wilmington, Del. The hospital:

Dr. Ailawadi, M.D., the Chair of Cardiac Surgery at Michigan Medicine, specializes in minimally invasive valve surgery as well as complex cardiac operations. This video shows step by step footage of a Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG) in a complex patient. In this case, CABG was performed through a sternotomy (through the breast bone) using the internal thoracic artery and saphenous leg veins to bypass obstructed coronary arteries. In this video, Dr. Ailawadi will perform a triple vessel bypass (CABG) which has been shown to minimize the risk of future heart attack and help patients live longer in the setting of complex coronary artery disease.

Female Foley Insertion (Urinary Catheter)- Nursing Skills

In this video, we’re going to look at inserting a Foley catheter in a female. Of course make sure you’ve verified your order and told the patient what’s happening. You’ll also typically want to perform perineal care before you start. Then, you’ll want to assist the patient into the appropriate position. For females, that’s supine with their knees bent and feet close to their hips – allowing their knees to fall to the side. You may need a helper to help hold the patient in this position. How to start a peripheral IV in the dorsum of the hand: clinical nursing skill technique.

Starting an IV (intravenous catheter) can be an intimidating experience for nurses, especially nursing students and new nurses. However, nurses will perform IV insertions often, so this is an important nursing skill to learn.

Before starting an IV, always follow the protocols of your facility, as well as manufacturer's instructions for any supplies used.

In this video, Nurse Sarah demonstrates how to start a peripheral IV in the dorsum of the hand. Prior to inserting the IV, you'll want to do the following:

-Gather supplies
-Perform hand hygiene
-Prepare supplies (including priming the saline flush, removing air from extension tubing, opening packages, completing labels, and any other steps required by your facility.
-Locate a suitable vein
-Perform hand hygiene
-Don gloves


If the patient has a lot of hair, you might want to use clippers to trim the hairs prior to starting the IV. You may also apply a tourniquet to help veins move near the surface of the skin.


Next, you'll want to clean the site using the cleaner that came in the IV start kit, such as ChloraPrep.


Once the site has dried completely, you can insert the IV. Stabilize the vein with your non-dominant hand, and insert the IV's needle into the vein, watching carefully for blood return (or a blood flash) in the chamber. Advance the IV around 2mm more to ensure the plastic cannula is in the vein, then thread the cannula into the vein and press the needle safety button.

Also, in the past I used "keratinocyte" and "squamous cell" interchangeably (this is because in dermatopathology, we see and talk about squamous cell carcinomas all the time, and those tumors are composed of keratinocytes). But technically, in normal skin histology, "squamous cell" refers only to the flattened keratinocytes in the superficial epidermis. Thankfully, a histology PhD colleague pointed this out to me and corrected my lazy nomenclature!
