Rubber Band Ligation of Internal Hemorrhoids Using Space Bander

Rubber band ligation is a procedure in which the hemorrhoid is tied off at its base with rubber bands, cutting off the blood flow to the hemorrhoid. This treatment is only for internal hemorrhoids. To do this procedure, a doctor inserts a viewing instrument (anoscope) into the anus. The hemorrhoid is grasped with an instrument, and a device places a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid. The hemorrhoid then shrinks and dies and, in about a week, falls off. A scar will form in place of the hemorrhoid, holding nearby veins so they don't bulge into the anal canal. The procedure is done in a doctor's office. You will be asked whether the rubber bands feel too tight. If the bands are extremely painful, a medicine may be injected into the banded hemorrhoids to numb them. After the procedure, you may feel pain and have a sensation of fullness in the lower abdomen. Or you may feel as if you need to have a bowel movement. Treatment is limited to 1 to 2 hemorrhoids at a time if done in the doctor's office. Several hemorrhoids may be treated at one time if the person has general anesthesia. Additional areas may be treated at 4- to 6-week intervals.

SpaceBander is designed to offer a quick, effective and painless treatment of internal hemorrhoids with minimal patient recovery time. Its smooth curved design allows for painless insertion and placement. It is made without natural rubber latex and is ready to use right out of the package with two preloaded bands. To begin, place the patient in the left lateral decubitus position. With lubrication and 4x4 gauze, perform a digital rectal examination assessing the patient's pathology as well as the size and location of the internal hemorrhoid or hemorrhoids. To target the left lateral quadrant, orient the SpaceBander logos on the inner tube at the 6 o'clock or straight down position.
To deploy the band in the right anterior position, orient the logos on the inner tube toward 1 or 2 o'clock. For right posterior, orient the logo so they are parallel with the examining table. Ensure your finger and the SpaceBander device are well lubricated. Use a smooth arch maneuver to insert the curved stem of SpaceBander into the patient's rectum while aiming the open tip toward the targeted internal hemorrhoid. Once SpaceBander is in position, attach the vacuum locking assembly by twisting it onto the SpaceBander lure lock until there is a tight fit.
Prime the suction lock by pulling back the plunger a few times to confirm adequate suction. Once confirmed, pull back the plunger completely into the locking position. Use your thumb, index or middle finger to push down on the fingertip inserts of the star bolster until you feel and hear a clicking sensation. This clicking tactile function serves as a confirmation that the band has now been released. After deploying the band, release the vacuum locking assembly from the SpaceBander device, untwisting to release suction. Gently remove the SpaceBander device from the patient's rectum using the same arch maneuver used during insertion.
In the rare instance of a band misfire, or if you intend to treat more than one hemorrhoid per session, SpaceBander comes with a preloaded backup band. Simply slide the backup band down the pusher until it is seated on the inner tube.
