But some patients says the surgery has ruined their eyesight. Now an expert who once backed LASIK is campaigning to get it off the market. Dr. Tara Narula reports.

Recovery Tips

LASIK eye surgery is the best known and most commonly performed laser refractive surgery to correct vision problems. The total recovery time is 1 to 2 weeks. However, vision may fluctuate slightly over the next 2 months.

Avoid watching television or reading for the first few days.

You can get back to work after 1 week.

Avoid applying pressure on the eyes for 7 days.

Avoid dust, smoke, yard and garden work, and eye make-up.

Wear eye shields at night given by a surgeon for 1 week.

Driving is allowed after 4 to 5 days.

Avoid swimming or using a hot tub for 2 weeks after surgery.

While using the computer, take frequent breaks and lubricate your eyes with artificial tears.

Lumpectomy means that a focal area of cancer is going to be removed. A lot of patients with a lumpectomy don’t need any specific breast reconstruction, explains Dr. Miguel Angel Medina, Director of Microsurgery with Miami Cancer Institute.
Al the end of surgical treatment, all those patients go on to need radiation therapy. For patients who have large breasts, physicians have to take a larger lumpectomy than normal.

A brain surgery called a craniectomy is performed to remove a part of your skull in order to relieve pressure in an area when your brain swells from a traumatic brain injury. It is also performed to treat medical conditions that cause your brain to swell or bleed that can be caused by an aneurysm, brain tumor or other cancer.

This 3d animation shows how the surgical procedure decreases intracranial pressure (ICP), intracranial hypertension (ICHT), or heavy bleeding (also called hemorrhaging) inside your skull. If left untreated, pressure or bleeding can compress your brain and push it down onto the brain stem. This can be fatal or cause permanent brain damage.

Brain surgery is a very serious procedure under any circumstances, but a craniectomy is done when there is an immediate risk to the brain and neurological function due to severe brain injury or stroke.

This video, created by Nucleus Medical Media, shows a coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) procedure used to combat coronary artery disease. Beginning with a midline sternal incision, the heart is connected to a perfusion machine which will take over the duties of the heart while the surgery takes place. Two different grafts are used to bypass the blocked coronary arteries: the internal thoracic artery from inside the chest wall, and the saphenous vein from the leg. After the procedure, the heart is shocked to restart its beating. A drainage tube is left at the incision site to drain away excess fluid. The animation continues to show two other types of approaches to a coronary artery bypass graft, off-pump bypass surgery and minimally invasive bypass surgery.

This is similar to the procedure performed on former president Bill Clinton and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

From across the room, using controls and pedals—pediatric surgeons at Golisano Children’s Hospital are now able to operate on patients without even touching them. “It allows performances of deep surgeries in the pelvis or abdomen through tiny, little incisions as opposed to a traditional, large incision to get access to the areas where urologists often operate,” explained Dr. Rahman Abd-El-Barr, a pediatric urologist with Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida.

The DaVinci robot is a robotic platform that allows surgeons to do minimally invasive surgery, leaving patients with smaller incisions and a quicker recovery. “This is important because it allows us to minimize recovery time, pain, bleeding with surgery, and especially with kids, it helps them to get back on their feet right away,” he said.

So when high school athlete, Reagan Rebeor found out she needed to have kidney surgery, she decided to have it robotically. “Thankfully, I did that because if not, I would have had a long scar down my stomach instead of small holes, small incisions. I had pain for three days, three or four days. Then after that, I was fine,” she said.

While it’s not an option for all pediatric surgeries, doctors say it can be very beneficial for teenage and adult patients needing reconstructive surgery. An option that allows patients a quicker and easier recovery.
