Key Steps — Using an AED

In a real emergency, call your local emergency number first. The video demonstrates the AED device; this checklist is the standard sequence taught for its use.

  1. Confirm the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally; send someone to call emergency services and bring the AED. Start CPR while it is fetched.
  2. Switch the AED on and follow its voice prompts — the device talks you through every step.
  3. Expose the chest and attach the pads exactly as the pictures on the pads show: one on the upper right chest, the other on the left side below the armpit.
  4. Make sure nobody is touching the person while the AED analyses the heart rhythm.
  5. If a shock is advised, check again that everyone is clear, then press the shock button.
  6. Immediately resume chest compressions after the shock (or if no shock is advised) and continue CPR until the AED prompts you to pause for the next analysis.
  7. Keep following the prompts until emergency help takes over or the person shows clear signs of life.
