Pregnancy — Scans, Checks & Week-by-Week Videos

Pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks from the first day of the last period, and a lot happens at the routine checks along the way. This hub brings together our ultrasound and antenatal-care videos, a plain-language guide, and the due date calculator, so you can see what each appointment involves.

Frequently asked questions

How is a due date worked out?

The standard estimate is 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of the last menstrual period. An early ultrasound can refine the estimate, which is why the date sometimes shifts after the first scan.

What does an ultrasound scan show?

Scans confirm the pregnancy is in the uterus, estimate age and due date, count babies, and later check growth, the placenta's position and the baby's anatomy. They use sound waves, not radiation.

Which symptoms in pregnancy need urgent care?

Seek urgent care for vaginal bleeding, severe abdominal pain, a severe headache or vision changes, sudden swelling, leaking fluid, or a clear reduction in the baby's movements. Trust your instincts — maternity teams would always rather check.

Can I exercise during pregnancy?

For most uncomplicated pregnancies, regular moderate activity is encouraged and helps with fitness, sleep and mood. Activities with a high fall or contact risk are best avoided, and your own care team can advise for your situation.
