What is double eyelid surgery?
The people of an oriental race or south-east Asians have big upper eyelids or sagging upper eyelids which give a visual impression of having small eyelids. They do not form eyelid fold. A person who does not have an eye fold but desires to get an eye fold may have to undergo double eyelid surgery.

What is the upper eye fold?
When we observe the anatomy of upper eyelids there is a muscle known as levator palpebrae superiors (LPS) Which helps in raising and closing of the eyelids. Eyelid fold is formed only when we open our eyes this is because a thin layer of LPS muscle gets inserted into the skin. When this muscle contracts to open the eyelid, the layer of the skin where the LPS muscle attaches gets pulled in, which forms the eyelid fold.
The people who do not have upper eyelid fold means that they do have LPS muscle but this does not get inserted into the skin. So in Asian blepharoplasty or double eyelid surgery doctors insert this LPS muscle into the skin through a surgical procedure. Also, doctors access whether the patient has excess upper eyelid fat/ skin so they may remove it but the LPS muscle is sutured into the skin so that the upper eyelid fold is formed.

Asian blepharoplasty involves three things
1. Suturing/ stitching of LPS muscle to the skin
2. Removal of excess fat if needed
3. Removal of excess skin if needed

1. Asian blepharoplasty or double eyelid surgery can be performed on Caucasians?
The answer to this question is NO, as they do not require it because they already have an upper eye fold.

2. Can Double eyelid surgery be performed on white skin??
Yes. It can be performed on any colour of skin. It can be performed on anyone who desires to have an upper eye fold who does not have an eye fold. It is not related to any skin colour, it's just about whether the person has upper eyelid fold or not.

The obstetric examination is distinct from other examinations in that you, the clinician, are trying to assess the health of two individuals – the mother and the fetus – simultaneously. From the initial history, you should be able to judge the health of the pregnancy, any risk factors that need to be addressed, and any concerns from the parents. The history is an opportunity for you to find out how much the parents know about pregnancy, labour and delivery and if they have any preferences to which these events are carried out. A carefully taken history will also direct your attention to specific signs during the examination. As such, it is important that you develop a concise and systematic method of taking the history and carrying out the examination so that you do not miss any important information. This article focuses primarily on the examination. Pregnancy is a sensitive issue, especially for the primigravida’s. Therefore, extra care is needed when you approach a pregnant woman. Always obtain expressed informed consent before examining her and have a chaperone accompany you throughout the examination. A walk-through of what you will be doing is a good way of reassuring the patient and allows the examination to go on smoothly. It is also important to let your patient know that if the examination is too painful, she can stop at any time she wants. Finally, before you begin, you should always wash your hands, especially at an OSCE station.
