The thyroid gland lies in the midline of the anterior neck, just caudal to the thyroid cartilage. To inspect the thyroid gland, the examiner stands in front of the patient. The examiner asks the seated patient to dorsiflex (extend) the neck and swallow a sip of water. Minor enlargement of the gland may only become apparent on inspection in this position. Palpation of the thyroid gland is typically performed with the examiner standing behind the patient. Both lobes and the isthmus of the thyroid gland should be palpated for any nodules or diffuse enlargement. Mobility of the thyroid gland with swallowing should be assessed with palpation. Nodules arising from the thyroid gland typically move with swallowing. A hard, fixed thyroid gland could indicate malignancy. If a central nodule is identified, the patient is asked to protrude the tongue. Upward movement of the central nodule on protrusion of the tongue indicates a thyroglossal cyst. Auscultation is performed at the superior poles of bilateral lobes as this is where the superior thyroid artery is most superficial and bifurcates into its terminal branches. A bilateral bruit over the superior poles suggests Graves disease. Examination of the thyroid gland is completed by palpating the regional cervical lymph nodes for any enlargement.

One of the most common knee injuries in contact and collision sports is a medial collateral ligament (MCL) injury. This is a ligament on the medial (side closest to the midline) side of your knee that provides stability against side-to-side stress to the knee. You might injure it by cutting maneuvers in sports like soccer or hockey. You can also suffer an MCL injury if another player hits you on the outside of your knee.

Unlike tears of the ACL, MCL injuries most often heal without surgery. You might need to wear a hinged knee brace for 2-6 weeks. The length of time you miss from sports or exercise varies depending on the location and severity of the injury.

Knee replacement, commonly known as complete knee replacement or knee arthroplasty, is a surgical treatment that resurfaces a knee that has been destroyed by arthritis. The extremities of the bones that make up the knee joint, as well as the kneecap, are capped with metal and plastic pieces. Someone with severe arthritis or a major knee injury may benefit from this procedure.

The knee joint can be affected by a variety of arthritis forms. The degradation of joint cartilage and neighboring bone in the knees can be caused by osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease that primarily affects middle-aged and older persons. Rheumatoid arthritis produces pain and stiffness by inflaming the synovial membrane and resulting in an excess of synovial fluid. Traumatic arthritis, or arthritis caused by an injury, can harm the joints.
The purpose of knee replacement surgery is to resurface damaged areas of the knee joint and cure knee discomfort that has not responded to prior therapies.

Surgeons at St Mary's Hospital, part of Imperial College Healthcare have come up with a new surgical procedure that cures heartburn with a device called RefluxStop.

Mr Ahmed Ahmed, a consultant surgeon, says surgery should now be seen as an alternative to life-long drug treatment - as Sky's Thomas Moore reports.

Lattrell Wells was a perfect candidate for the MACI procedure. Dr. Michael O'Malley is a sports medicine surgeon at Carilion Clinic, "It’s a two stage procedure. So what we do is we actually harvest a small portion of the patient's cartilage and bone cells and we send it to a lab where the lab then that grows additional cartilage cells. It comes back to us in a little sheet and six weeks after that initial surgery, we re-implant the cartilage in a second surgery where we implant that sheet depending on the size of lesion right where his defect. Colonoscopies are essential for detecting colorectal abnormalities, including colon polyps. Polypectomy, the surgical removal of these growths, can prevent them from becoming cancerous. This article offers a brief overview of colonoscopies, colon polyps, and polypectomy procedures.

A colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination allowing healthcare providers to visualize the colon and rectum using a colonoscope. The colonoscope, a flexible tube with a camera and light source, helps detect abnormalities, including polyps or tumors.

Colon polyps are abnormal growths arising from the colon's inner lining. While most polyps are benign, some can become malignant. Adenomatous polyps have a higher potential to become cancerous, whereas hyperplastic and inflammatory polyps pose a lower risk.

Polypectomy involves removing colon polyps during a colonoscopy. Two primary techniques include snare polypectomy, using a wire loop to cut the polyp, and cold forceps polypectomy, which employs forceps to grasp and remove smaller polyps.

Following a polypectomy, patients may experience mild discomfort or bleeding. Regular surveillance is crucial to minimize colorectal cancer risk. The frequency of surveillance colonoscopies depends on the number, size, and type of polyps found, as well as the patient's overall risk factors.

Colonoscopies and polypectomies play vital roles in detecting and removing colon polyps, reducing the risk of colorectal cancer, and maintaining optimal colon health.
